This is some of the pewter that I melted down and recast

One time pewter contained lead in amounts deemed to be dangerous for health so I have avoided it since, using old tankards etc with unknown provenance. Its low melting point is attractive.

Love your pen it is impressive. Fun to experiment this one is a feature pen.

You are right in what you say Peter. Old pewter does contain lead and it is best avoided. The pewter I used was relatively modern them being Pewter Tankards that I won in First Aid Competitions. Kept the more memerable ones and smelted some of the others. I still have quite a few to have a go at

Just drilled a 19mm hole in a bit of scrap 4x2 to the depth I wanted Ted. Also drilled a couple of 1mm escape holes to let the air get out during pouring.

Thanks Vic with Australias close proximity to Bali where Pewter abounds there have been Caution notices through Customs etc for ever it seems. I do remember when lead Soldiers in quantity were also the go.

The short distance using Pewter in a pen means the fingers are holding and rubbing the face a lot. Glad you are aware and careful, perhaps after so many years in the mining business it looks like a trifle, I do remember using Carbon Tetrachloride copiously to wash and clean Electrical Motors, Engine Parts etc.

Really like the idea of using pewter but how susceptible is it to nicks and dents ?
