Thank you for your comments. The finish is CA, I just chose the light so that the grain is visible on that photo. Here is another photo of that pen to sort of show finish. Finally I am getting consistent results with CA.

Know exactly how soft lighting knocks out shine happened to me this morning with cocobolo. The red is beautiful, like that combination.

A super pen ilya, a great choice of wood that shows off really nice with the gun metal accents .. The finish is superb ... :bwink:

Super pen Ilya ...don't think you will improve much on that finish as it looks absolutely perfect.:thumbs:

How many coats of CA did you use ?

How many coats of CA did you use ?

I don't have any fixed number of CA coats that I put on. In order to have a better size match of the blank to the kit, I usually turn timber just under the size of the kit, then make enough coats of CA to have the diameter larger than the kit by about 0.1mm. Then I lightly sand and polish CA trying to make the finished pen within 0.02mm of specs. This doesn't work every time, but I am getting better with this. Usually I end up with 10 to 15 layers of CA.
