Bottle stopper question

I have made a couple of the Axminster bottle stoppers using one of their purpose made mandrels. Turned out ok but wondered if there was an alternative way of doing it. Someone commented on using a piece of dowel or something. Two things against the Axminster kits. First is if I am giving away these things I dont want to be paying nearly £4 a piece for the privilege. Secondly, I am a bit concerned about the material. I read somewhere that there are a variety of stopper kits, some solid stainless steel and the rest more commonly just plated. With cases of the plating reacting with the bottle contents, I am not too keen to get involved with that minefield. So I started looking at dowelling. Any thoughts on the best way. I got some stoppers designed for bottle optics from a local bar supplier. These have a nice parallel hole rather than the replacement rubber bungs Axminster sell for the kits. Would the best way be to drill the blank and epoxy the dowel into the hole using the dowel in a jacobs chuck? Another thought is rather than a wood dowel, have a look in a model shop for dowel made from a type of plastic. I know this is probably basic stuff, but would rather ask than try to reinvent the wheel.

I made some years ago and used natural cork instead of rubber etc, if I remember right I used a homemade pin chuck to turn them and then used homemade dowels to fix the corks into the holes!:thinks:

Robbie, I make and sell them by the ton. I also have a couple in the house for personal use (I know - shocking isn't it - but sometimes two bottles is just too much:devil:)

I can't help but agree with you on the price, although the price does come tumbling if you buy enough at a time, but I can re-assure you that I have never seen any evidence of corrosion. I suspect if I kept the stopper constantly dipped in the wine, the acidity may attack the plating, but it's suspended in nothing more than fresh air (well almost fresh) and I have never experienced an issue with either gold or chrome.
