I have some of the rubbers for bottle stoppers so thought I would just make up a couple to see what they looked like. Made from odd bits of yew for the tops and beech for the rubber holder. The stopper part can be removed for cleaning. May have to redo the one on the right as the holder is slightly too long

They are glued in Jim, and the little lip on the end is just enough to hold the rubber in place when in use yet small enough to allow it to be pulled off for cleaning.

I think I had a hydraulic lock with the glue when I put one of them in

When I glue dowels into dead end holes I always run the point of a chisel or knife down the dowel to put a little groove in to allow any air to escape.

I was going for the onion shape and was going for the pointed look but decided to add the little bit so no sharp point

I forgot to do that Bill normally I will do that

Very nice.

One concern about the shape on the right - as a practical matter, it's not a good idea to have a pointed end on wine stoppers. That point will be a problem when it comes time to put the stopper in the bottle. If it's too painful to put the stopper in the bottle, the user may decide to just finish the bottle instead.
