Had a go at a lattice top box, something I've wanted to try for ages.

Was going well and then suddenly when doing the inside beads it collapsed. :sob:

So what did I do wrong ? I'm wondering if the beads on the top aren't deep enough ?

Wrong wood ? It's a piece of sapele I think.

It's 4 inch diameter if that helps.

How have you mounted the lid for turning and also how thick is the top for the lattice. Another question what tools are you using and they need to be kept sharp so they will need to be touched up more than usual

I did the one below but this was a flat lattice and not one incorporated into a lid also a picture of my set up attached to a faceplate

Bugger, I was hoping one of you might have some insights into what I did wrong.

:sob:

The only thing you did wrong there Phil, was your choice of wood.
Sapele is splintery sh#te for this sort of thing!
Try a closer grained wood!

Well spotted Neil I missed the wood type. have a go at beech that is what I used. Not all is lost clean off the lid top add a rim re-cut a lattice and insert it into the lid rim. As you have already found out very gentle cuts and a set of needle files to clean up any minor bits that did not come out with the turning tools
