Hi, I'm new here, so hello! Got my Lathe last week and just waiting on the tooling and bits from TB to arrive :)

So my question is, can you buy the brass tubing separate from the kit so I can turn blanks to practice without burning through a kit each time? My local model shop sells various sizes but is there anything special about the tube in the kits?

Thanks, Phil

Welcome Philly, there are plenty who will guide you right there with tubes etc.
I will say you don't need tubes to practice turning.
Anything you can get between centers will do nicely.

You have a good point, I ordered 30 odd pen blanks off ebay for a few pounds for practising. As soon as my drive center arrives I will just try it your way.

Cheers

Raid a skip or your broom cupboard find any old chunk of wood, Granddads walking stick, wooden leg, Tommy's bedstead anything just to get going init?
lump of coal, dry turd it don't matter just do it.
Be sure to picture it and display it for us to laugh at.
As if we would, not yet anyway if you are starting out you will find nothing but help and encouragement from us.
Maybe some constructive criticism at first, then when we get to know you we rip in and laugh init?

Welcome Phil, you won't go wrong with the advice Grump has given you, if you turn your pen blanks round between centres for practice you can then drill these on the lathe .. :winking:

Hi Phil

Welcome to the forum, this is all good advice, if you've ordered blanks and pen kit's I assume that you've ordered the proper bushings, if you have you are off and running, can I suggest that you have a look at YouTube at how other turners do...A) drilling for the tube and B) Finishing.

Good Luck in your endeavours

Yes, I ordered the bushings :)

I bought some Record tools from ebay and they should be here soon. The only trouble I have with youtube is I can't see the tool as it touches the workpiece. From what I can tell the tool is touching the wood and the back end is lifted until the tool is at an angle to make a cutting edge. Sound about right?

Oh no.... Don't use the word "bushings" you will have old grump going off on one, you need to talk proper, none of that American Crap Init.....:face:

The correct English wording is Bushes... :face:

Welcome to the forum Philly. Good advice from the grump and don't forget to post your pictures of progress on here, no matter what they look like either..

Happy turning..:winking:

You get the bevel of the tool rubbing then lift the handle, keeping the tool in contact with the rest, until it just begins to bite. Start off with shallow cuts untill you get the feel of it then you can start taking deeper cuts but don`t rush it.

Got the tools, they feel very solid.

I bought a skew, a parting tool, a rounded thingie and a gouge(deep channel in possibly a bowl gouge) :nooidea: I will get pics up soon. Can you use a bowl gouge for spindle work?

if you can get them look for Richard raffans dvd turning wood and turning bowls. they are great videos of correct tool use and he is the master of the scew chisel. I've watched them over and over and learnt no end from him.
