Hi Guys,

Following yesterday's bronco-busting escapade I had another hectic ride around the workshop on my lathe today when trying to round this piece of brown mallee. Got there eventually, and the rest was pure joy. The grain on this bowl is beautiful, and the colour/tone is much different than the dish I turned yesterday. The finished size is 8.5" X 6". Yes, I know there are radial lines In the top of the bowl but having already lacerated my index finger once I decided to quit sanding before passing out through loss of blood, LOL! (It did bloody hurt, though!) Finished with friction polish inside and beeswax on bottom.Brown Mallee Burr (2) finished..JPGBrown Mallee Burr (2) bottom..JPG

Regards,

Bob.

well done mate they do take some getting used to I must admit I always sand the wings with the 2" sanding disk with the lathe stationary then finish by hand with the last few grits

Bob,

Great minds & all that, I have exactly the same kind of wood on the lathe @ the minute just waiting for a polish.
Blooming hard stuff aint it.

That is one nice bowl.
Like Woody said, it needs sanding with the lathe stationary, I use a black & decker mouse sander to begin with then hand sand the last couple of grits, a LOT less painful.

Hi, guys,

Many thanks for your comments! Much appreciated.

Woody and Steven, Yes, that's the method I shall adopt in future. Or else hook myself up to a blood bank while sanding, LOL!

Lovely piece of wood Bob, it is good to see turned bowls shown on here as very good advice get thrown back at us. I have seen videos of sanding pieces like this using some kind of harbour, do these actually help? :nooidea:

Hi, Jim,
I've never used one of these, but I think Woody and Steve have the right idea - turn the lathe of when it comes to sanding those edges. Jeez, the "wings" are razor sharp and when they whizz round on the lathe it's like getting whacked with a benchsaw!

Lovely bowl Bob and no doubt about that mate, you could have got away with the radials as a reflection if you hadn't mentioned them.
Simply stunning and really good to see how your turning has really flourished and got more daring and adventurous over the last few years.
Be careful though and keep the fingers on your hands not the floor If I am rubbing down on the lathe I use one of these either on my Unitool or in a Battery rotary drill.

Take a guess
The problem with sanding wings while the lathe is running is it`s very easy to alter the shape to the detriment of the piece, particularly on thin items.

A good tip is to sharpen your gouge prior to taking your last cut, this gives you the best chance of achieving a clean cut after which hand sanding off the lathe means you can easily monitor sanding progress.

Lovely piece of burr, Bob & a very good effort, I like the shape you achieved, though for me burrs are always winners.

LOL, Brian, you're gonna give me an inflated ego! Showing that piccy has made me realise that I have tools to achieve a similar setup, yippee!
Many thanks, matey!
