This is a chrome slimline dressed in Brown Oak which a mate let me have, very open grained so I finished it with a wax cutting polish & brown Hutt wax but still ended up with a few whiteish flecks in the grain.

an interesting blank, and a nice result.

What are the options for grain filling an open pored pen- I have wet oil sanded furniture pieces, but have no experience with pens.

On open gain timber I spin the lathe at 500rpm & run thin ca along the blank as I sand. The wet ca mixes with the sanding dust to fill the grain. Repeat until the grain is filled & the timber is smooth.

I'm not a fan of CA Andy, that's not to say I won't use it but I prefer Hutt wax which I find holds up well.

That is a good looking pen and blank Doug .. It ain't easy keeping that open grain clear of sand Doug, the best way for me is not to sand at all and get the best finish with a skew .. It still isn't 100% but it does help ..

I do the same as Bill, I put some ca on and sand. The slurry formed fills the open grain.
