005.jpgI found a piece of buckeye burl in a mate's workshop. He said it was too small for him to use so I got 6 blanks from it. Had fun turning it. The first top shattered on me - no doubt my poor technique!!! Stripped the tube and replaced the blank. Success with this one. I used a Classic kit from Pencrafts.002.jpg

Blimey, those kits still around?
I thought they went out when Woody was a kid.
Nice blank though.

While I say well done for perseverance in making the blank work for you.

In my opinion there are a few problems in the finish of the pen I think it would only be right to say Chris.

The cap end, nearest the center band is a little over turned as there is a step there. The clip end looks as though it has a little rougher finish and a little under turned. I would have said it was built the wrong way around but the grain of the wood doesn't show that.

The overall finish looks like a nice polished finish.

Overall a nice looking pen that could be a really superb pen with a little care at the fittings..

Well done, nice blank and presented well.

It's only my oppinion Chris, nothing personal.

On the next one try Boiled linseed oil on it before you finish - I only use CA as a finish so this is what works for me - if it goes to plan you should be very pleased with the results as it will give it much more colour and depth. If you want it :thumbs:

Beautiful blank Chris :love_it:

But as Eamonn says there a a few problems with the pen.
Very good effort though as Buckeye burr is not the easiest wood to work with :thumbs:

I have made quite a few pens from this wood Chris, and as said, it can be a cow to turn .. It is a good looking pen without doubt, but as said a little tidying up of the edges will help make it look very nice indeed .. Good finish to it my friend .. :thumbs:

You can have as much experience as you like Les but if you don't gain knowledge along the way from others then you will always make the same mistakes.

Isn't that called experience Eamonn :thinks: practical contact with and observation of facts - I think that's what Les is suggesting ?

Very nicely done pen mate!...:thumbs:

Great looking pen well done.:thumbs::thumbs:

Lovely pen. The different colours and grain patterns in Buckeye makes it an impressive blank

:thumbs::thumbs::thumbs:

Different soft browns and this kit wonderful save for the result you acheived. Persistance pays. More to come.

Peter.

Well done, Chris.

Bob.

No sh17 Sherlock..:rolling:

Where is the observation of facts in above posts?

Les is right but if we don't share our experience then "practical contact with an observation of facts" has not happened.

It's just my opinion .. :face:

Eamonn - you suggested some turning improvements, I suggested BLO as a pre finish as it makes the wood really pop. There's some facts to be going on with. Others may not want to make those type of comments.
