I'm off to see my sawyer this Thursday (Goulden Hardwoods) to sort out some oak for a coffee table. He has recently got in some burr elm and london plane - I'd be happy to get some if anybody wants. Can't really tell you how good or bad either is, only that Paul thinks I'll really like the burr elm so he is pleased with it. Also don't know what formats - he's planked a lot of it so it will be about 2" thick and waney edged. He *may* have some bowl blanks but can't say for sure.

It's that sort of place that you arrive and poke around for what he's got on the day, but if you're the gambling sort I'd be happy to oblige you.

PM me with details and top price you'd be willing to pay per cubic foot before Wednesday evening please. Alex, if you're not too busy at work or college and want to come along for the ride we're leaving B'stoke at about 11.15.

London Plain is massively under-rated.

My nephew is a tree surgeon down there, and the Councils etc. deliberately go out of their way to tell everyone that the wood is rubbish and no good for anything however, it's got gorgeous grain and if you manage to get "pippy" plain, it can be quite stunning.

Unfortunately, living in the far north of Scotland, it'd be rather expensive to get shipped up here, and I already have two huge slabs of sycamore in my store-shed, waiting to become my new computer desk!

I'd love to see some photos of what you get, both woods are favourites of mine.

Nic.

Sounds like a nice place to visit David. If they have any burr walnut I'd be interested in some.

Ha - Paul I know Paul Goulden as well and as David will no doubt say his timber store is an amazing place - it's that deep in the woods that you've got as much chance as finding a Dragon as Burr Walnut. Having said that........ He does have probably 50 walnut gun stocks ! I picked up one last time with a lot of figuring in it. He's normally around on Thursdays and Sunday's and just over the hill from me so if you fancy a trip there give me a shout On the down side he sells olive to posh people who like burning it for the aroma. I can see Neil Farrar squirming already ......... :sob::sob:

Alex found a rather lovely piece of oak burr - spotted it a second before I did, dammit!! :nonono::nonono:

I bought a bit of beautifully figured walnut and a large burr elm board which is still unseasoned, will have to go in the garage roof for a year or so. I could have spent a whole lot more there but the image of SWMBO's face restrained me ...

:eeeeek:

The plane hadn't been cut when we were there, but Paul sent me a pic of it this afternoon. Can't speak for anyone else but I'm definitely going to order some! The boards are 1 1/2" thick and seem to have a sharp divide in colouration - pink one side, brown the other.

Told ya it were lovely stuff!

Would you believe that they just chuck it by the tens of tonnes around London every year? Deliberately inform everyone working on it that it's "Rubbish for any kind of use, not worth keeping".

My Nephew was looking into collecting some of the massive round stumps that are left over after the councils coppice the things year after year, and seeing if he could slab them, dry it and sell it on, but it proved a pretty heavy undertaking for one young fella with a family, especially one with no powerful connections when it comes to dealing with councils.

Paul got this from the lads who have the London Council business, so I hope it's the first of many!
