This was made from my lucky dip blank courtesy of Jim at the Woody open day.

The cap was really chippy and took nearly 10 ml of CA during turning, I've worn out a pair of shoes with trips to the grinder, roughing gouge is about 2 " shorter.

I do hope the customer likes it, because I do not want to do any more of that timber for a while :funny:

CA finish 10 coats, polished with burnishing cream.

2 views to show off the figuring.

The elm burl came out fine with the figure intact and is beautiful; I have greater success with a bowl gouge and if a chipping we will go it minimises the damage IMHO, the gouge being a half inch. The way I sharpen my gouge is actually flat on a right angle almost to the stone so the cutting edge is much stronger. I look at the angle from above turning the gouge by hand in fact after I send this I will at great personal cost to me get SWMBO to take a couple of pics of this method. I have an 18 inch fluro above the grinder it is broad enough to light up both of the dual wheels, works for me simply does not bite as badly as the undercut you get the other way caused by the shape of the wheel.

Kind regards Peter.:thinks:

Peter His Method Of Sharpening Gouges

Explanations first this is an open gouge one of two I use, also I left the tool rest at the angle I use fixed for a skew chisel, On another wheel the tool rest is set differently but the wifes union only allows short sessions before overtime commences initial charge so far lunch at her favourite Chinese Resturant.

Please note my hands further back so you can see better, pics straight off the camera reduced and here to follow my relpy above.

Pics 1 & 2 my method flute right angle to the left.

Pics 3 & 4 conventional method.

Method 1 & 2 movement up and down at the grinding angle. Method 3 & 4 left to right at the grinding angle.using the hands that launched thousands of pens. Suitably thanked the Photographer who is quite pleased with her finished work.

Kind regards Peter.:rolling:
