I have some nice looking elm from Holyroodhouse no less. It has some burrs within it- is there such a thing as pippy elm?

Do I need to fill these either before turning, or during the finishing process. I am seeking to achieve a high gloss CA finish. If I do need to fill, what should I use- I do have some shellac sticks which I have used on jewellery boxes, but never tried it on anything turned.

I am pretty sure I have heard of pippy Elm so yes it does exist.
If not, be the first to invent it init?

I would soak in thin CA before during and when finishing and fill with the sanding dust.
Others have different methods, metal powders, turquoise, contrasting colour sawdust etc.

OK, lets see if the pictures work...

They are from my phone, so wont be fantastic.

we have:
some elm from Holyroodhouse
some lacewood from the Tower of London
and some curly maple from who knows where!

I have ordered 5 zetas from Dan, so it will probably be a couple of elm, a couple of lacewood and a maple. They are as gifts for my daughters nursery staff when she leaves for school. I have chosen these kits because of their reputation, and because the single tube will speed the job up by 50%, and reduce the potential for errors!

Thanks Brian. I will use the elm dust on this rather than anything too bling!

when filling holes, I do what Brian said and then during sanding I put some ca on and sand that with it, it fills the holes excellently and seals the wood as well.

If the holes are in the pippy part which is dark use either a dark wood dust or coffee to fill it. And do it just before the last cut

Depending on the size of the voids i will use the "Very Thin CA" it seems to get into the small holes better .. But doing it as Brian says you won't be a million miles away ..

i will have a go and see how I get on. One thing that I haven't worked out is how I can use an oil to pop the grain, and not have issues with the CA'd area. I guess if it was before the final cut it wouldn't have CA anywhere except the void and filler, so no problem.
