What does it mean when your CA finish starts going blotchy? I came to the shed tonight to chill out and I'm leaving more stressed!!!

The photo is so out of focus, it's hard to see anything let alone what you call blotchy.

Sorry about that, yes I knew it was a risk when I posted, however iPhones obviously can only focus a certain amount. The best I can describe is that when tcut has been applied, it just goes patchy and non shiny in some places...it's very strange and has never happened to me before

I've had a few of those in my time..you seem to do the same exact procedure each time and then get differing results. To try and combat this I have use a coat of sanding sealer before applying the CA which seems to have worked on occasions, combined with vigorous application of the CA. I use a method which a certain Canadian chap did a tutorial on you tube a few years back, I'll see if I can find it and post it on here for you.

It looks like you have sanded through the CA.

Sometimes I get this if I have sprayed accelerator either too close or too much(same difference I suppose) it forms slightly milky blobs which is not so obvious until finishing. This can happen when the ca is getting old with accelerator also. I try to check before the last coats of ca go on and usually do not use accelerator on the last dose of ca. The only way to correct is to take the ca off I use a sharp skew as a negative scraper and if done gently can usually start with 400 abranet. Might be worth while trying without accelerator just to eliminate the problem.

Why use accelerator at all , stuff is dry in seconds.

Depends on what kind of CA you use I use thin as it soaks into the wood and a very small squirt of accelerator from about 500mm does the trick or wait a few minutes.

I always use thin CA and always use accelerator, I put 20 coats of CA on as a minimum and am not prepared to wait even 30 seconds between coats for it to dry, I have never had a coat dry in a few seconds without accelerator. Small squirts from a distance is also what I do.

Guys thank you so much for your help. I'm playing the doting fiancé tonight so I won't be going in the shed but one of the reasons I think it went all tits up was that I changed the type of accelerator I was using...have now ordered the old stuff and will see what happens. I also ordered some aerosole lacquer as I am just simply curious about it...what's the worst that can happen? Shiny fingers from r the week maybe? [emoji23][emoji23]

When CA finishing was in the early development I bought a DVD from a guy called Eric Anderson entitled CA Finishing A Perfect Finish EVERY TIME on the label. Everyone has their own way that works for them.

I did find mixing the brands of CA and Accellerator difficult and a cause of white out.

Peter.
