The fumes are indeed unpleasant and potentially harmful. as Paul suggests a suitably rated face mask will do the job, but I also prefer to draw the fumes away from me by using a dust extractor with the exhaust hose located outside the workshop or pointing at an open door.

Most importantly, do not use a woodworking powered respirator as the filters in those are not designed for chemical fumes and will actually draw the fumes in rather than protecting you.

I know, damn immigrants, such a nuisance.
