ca finishing and the weather

Hi guys, I’m new to turning pens, but recently have been having problems with the bushes sticking to the blank after applying a ca finish. I have tried the tapered plastic bushes as well, but find that when breaking the bush off the blank, the finish is chipping. Have tried using a parting tool to remove some of the build up of glue, but still having problems.
As the heading says, does weather play a part, as am working in an unheated shed, and I don’t think I struggled so much when I started turning a couple of months ago?
How do other turners avoid chipping when removing the bushes?

Gavin, I have had that problem in the past as well.
I asked a pen turner I met at a show sometime ago and he looked at me in disgust as some people don't believe in using ca glue as a finish !!!
The way I have overcome the problem which is probably not the best way is to go around it with a small craft knife before I remove the bushings.
That works for me.

Hi Gavin,
I use the nylon bushes, when I have applied the layers of CA and before sanding/polishing I use a small/narrow woodturning part-off tool that I have ground to a vee point. I use this to gently get under the CA at each end of the pen barrels, I cut into the nylon rather than the barrel. This process virtually removes the danger of chip-outs when removing the bushes after polishing.

I think a solution is to use plastic bushings under the finished size to solve your problem when applying CA.

I work in a shed heated by +40°C sun and get the same problems.

Hi all,

I posted a thread sometime ago on the effects of the weather upon finishes. My workshop sitting about 9 degrees which I can work in if dressed warmly. However, all the finishing i try to do fails and that includes all finishing. You certainly can't use spray laquers, and liquid acrylics. Airbrushing is a definite no no, just too damp. I am turning bowls etc at the moment, but I am not finishing them, That can wait until next spring.
