You don't say what you are doing to the CA after you have applied it. Can you post photos to show the problem. Cloudy patches can be to do with moisture or you could have pressed the end of a blank when assembling and the CA has come loose.

Hi Buckeye
Thanks for the reply I think, but I'm not sure it happens when I spray on the accelerator. I will read up on how to add pics I'm a bit thick when it comes to thing like that haha

Hi Gary,
do you use accelerator, if so, you could be spraying too much too close, just a thought.

Sorry Gary, I missed your last post saying that you do use accelerator.
I spray from a long way back so that the blank runs into the mist rather than the spray hitting the blank full on, if you know what I mean.

As John says the accelerator can cause it if you spray too much or are too close, I spray just a whisper from about 10-12" away with the lathe spinning at about 1500.

Thick, medium or thin CA? That's the question..

I had a couple of pens go cloudy after a few months. That was on Kingwood, was told it was due to being an oily wood.

Which defeated the point of BLO on before CA.:nooidea: But I have since cleaned oily woods with meths or thinners prior to doing them, never had a problem since. Then again the one I had problems with was the first I had ever had in 10 years of doing CA.:noway1:still had :nooidea:

I did use accelerator for a short period, found I was getting loads of clouding, stopped using it and never had another problem..

Always find thin super glue always goes off pretty quick anyway.

I tried all viscosities of CA, found thin the best for finishing and it dries quick as well. Only ever use medium or thick for gluing if I'm desperate.

CA needs a little moisture to set, so the weather shouldn't really cause too much of a problem unless you are trying to put it on under water.

I think it's the accelerator you are using to be honest. Maybe a little too much, too close :nooidea::nooidea:

Another problem could be if you are wet finishing, (wet & dry or MM) breaking through the first coat then capping the moisture with the second coat.

To prevent it never use wet until you have at least 2 or 3 thin coats on. That's the CA and not on ya back..

That's my retake on it.. But those are all a a guess. That's what pen turning is all about init..

The brands of both CA and Accelerator can be incompatable also will wait for folks in the UK to give their verdicts. Personally I use few coats of CA and use one brand medium only.

I have used a few brands of accelerator and some turned cloudy white as soon as they were sprayed on. This was when I was using it while gluing the tubes. However, I've been using Bond It accelerator for some time now without any problems even if I drench the CA with it. I use Dans CA (Taylors Mirfield) and always use thin viscosity for finishing.

If you get any overrun over the edges of the barrel you're finishing, it's important to smooth it back as, when you push the pen fittings together, any glue on the ends can cause the pressure of the fittings to make the glue lift away from the wood, also causing milky patches.

If you're applying ca finish with the bushes still in place on your mandrel you'll get glue all over them as well as the pen barrel. This makes it difficult to get them apart without damaging the finish. I use nylon cones in place of bushes and never have a problem. This should cover most of the bases to your problem.

You can buy some material and make your own cones, buy polypropylene, ptfe, delrin or the like.
