My local landlord has recently returned from Canada after playing for Bath Rugby against a Canadian side 30+ years ago where he met his wife and stayed.  He brought back some Canadian Red Cedar which he was very proud of and gave me some to made a pen for him as it has a beautiful red colour (his words not mine).  Well it was a bugger to turn even with the sharpest of sharp skews and it was virtually white, boring and looked just like a piece of pine.  So a touch of the Lawton factor and hey presto, a lovely piece of Red Cedar.
