Carbide turning tools advice please.

As I have stated before the lathe I use for my pen turning is an adapted metal working lathe. One of the issues I have is it does not have a conventional tool rest when using gouges. I had a good look at it and have decided to machine a proper tool holder to accommodate the use of a gouge.
I have been looking at the carbide tipped offerings but they all seem to be from the USA does anyone in the UK do a similar tool for sensible money.

Oh and I have also found a woodturning club a fifteen minute drive from my home I intend to look them up.

Additionally you can make your own very easily,the variables are what sized lathe you have and the speed range is quite low as a rule,so the use of conventional gouges may be the better choice. Pic of your lathe?

I get my carbide cutters from Glenn Teagle. He also sells complete tools but I prefer to make my own.

There are some on eBay as well though if you know what to look for.

That club meets at Coulby Newham you might also look up a RPT turner based in Hartlepool: Dennis Wake who is also a member of the above club.

That way you might get some training and help.

What tool did you buy Dave? If it’s one with a flat insert be aware that you can resharpen these several times if you have a diamond hone. When I sharpen mine they end up sharper than when first bought!

Placed face down on a diamond file,just a few strokes are needed,when I turned the Wooly Mammoth Tooth I only used one sharpening when the four cutting surfaces blunted, I am still using that one today. A mate in the US doing the same task used round twenty cutter combos.

I bought the 10mm round gouge. Yes the club is in Coulby Newham its on every Wednesday evening from 18:30 till 21:00. I can be there in fifteen minutes.

The gouge turned up to day it looks the buisness. Cant wait to give it a go.

Tried the carbide tool today a total disaster. Nothing wrong with the carbide gouge as supplied. My lathe is just wrong for this type of application. If I intend to carry on with the wood turning I need a wood turning lathe. I need to be able to justify the outlay at present I can not. I'm not making any money out of my projects in fact they are costing me money. Hmm time for a rethink.
