Hi all, well I have done a few more bullet case pens......
These are .30 06 and fitted with new bullets, drilled to take a slimline refill. These are very long cases so a bit of thought had to go into these to allow the transmission to sit further in, the caps were a lot easier......I still have another 40 odd to do(20 pens) wish me luck!IMG_20190215_182026.jpg

Very nice Mark!!:thumbs::thumbs:
I like how the joint lines up perfectly.
Sometimes the drill follows an off center firing pin dent.
I either turn a new center on the metal lathe then drill or drill
from the inside.There is a perfectly centered recess that the drill will follow.

Hi Angelo, thank you....
I have a little trick for centering the drill......I use a reloading press to prep the cases, it resizes the neck and pushes the spent primers out..... they are 5mm so if I use a 6 mm drill first it 'normaly' centers on the primmer pocket:thumbs::thumbs:

Well, that's a good tip!
Thanks

Amazing, Mark

How long does each one take to make?
They look time consuming but very effective.
Do you finish the brass case with anything ?

No luck needed Mark you have mastered this with a beaut solution. My solution is to buy ammunition new without primers fitted. That takes care of knecking and stuff ,gives a wonderful case finish.

Immersed as you are these examples prove all the pre time spent was worthwhile and obvious.Wish you good fortune mate.

Peter.

Hi Peter,
I always batch these....once I have them sized and de primmed, I then seat a bullet and crimp the case, drill out the primmer pocket, glue in the tubes. It's then just push fitting the kit. As to any finish I like the once fired look so a little polish and then a laquer finish.
In total about 1hr per case and about 5 minutes each bullet to drill out if batched

Nicely :thumbs::thumbs: done.

How do you remove the lead contamination?:thinks:

Les

Hi Les,
I have seen various methods all with varying degrees of success.....some remove the back of the jacket and warm with a torch till it melts the lead, way too dangerous for me and it discoloures the head.
The method I use works 90% of the time....I drill my 2mm hole from the front first using a collet chuck on the lathe, then reverse the head and drill the back with a 6.5mm after a certain depth when I withdraw, it takes all the lead out with it. I cover the lathe bed when I do this and keep all the swarf and dimples of lead as a friend uses this to recast into ball shot for his muzzle loader:whistling:

I have done similar to remove lead, but now I use solid brass bullets.

Hi Les, they look like the 'los' bullets....I have some Barnes 'TSX' heads TBH they are bloody hard to drill....if it was a metal lathe I had with coolent I would go that way, but it's far to messy for my wood lathe and a rabbit hole I don't want to go down.....yet...:whistling:

You guys should make a video of the process. It would make good viewing.

My good friend Mik Lawrence recently did a live feed on Facebook to show exactly that. TBH there not that hard when your all set up for it, like everything else.... preparation, preparation,preparation.....
If anyone would like to try these I am happy to pass on cartridges and heads and instructions, buy your own slimline kits though:face:
