I noted in another thread that Woodhacker was making some nice Celtic knots. Coincidentally I was asked a few weeks ago by my wife's boss if I could help out his 11 year old son who need extra spoken English lessons using woodwork as the practical vehicle since he was not very academic. So with that in mind I first got him to turn a basic 7mm twist pen so that he could write out his vocabulary and he did a pretty good job. He then turned a passable bowl.

The next project was to make a table saw jig and then make a pen with a Celtic knot. Here is his first one produced this afternoon. The body is padauk, and the knot infill is in Wenge, Ropala lacewood and Oak (why those 3 ? They were the first bits of veneer that came to hand) . The finish is BLO/CA; sadly the photo with my phone does not show the shine fully but it does. Not a bad job for a 'youngun'

Copy away 4 pieces of standard veneer should fit into a 3 mm table saw kerf. but I forgot to say his mum wasn't too pleased I sent him home with his hands full of glue since each piece has to be glued together!! Note if you use Lakeland aluminium foil its thicker than the supermarket's pierce a few holes with a pin to allow the glue to bind its easier than sanding it!!

Australian is easy to understand, the Queen's English is easy, It's all the dialects that the pom's use, no wonder the poor boy is having trouble.:devil:

don't worry, we have enough trouble understanding each other ourselves

Australian is easy to understand, except for the woirds they make up .... What the hell is a Dinkum ???

The boy would also have trouble distinguishing Aussie genders ... both female and male sound the same :funny::funny::funny:
