Centre finder

I ordered one of these yesterday.

Proops centre finder for round bar lathes milling drilling 3 8 or 8mm spindle. M0286

I didn't think I needed one as I've used other methods before but I've had trouble recently finding the centre on some tapered bar. Hopefully it will work ok as I've made myself a carbide insert hollowing tool and I'm sure a couple of mates would like one as well.

surely something like this is easier to use since it does round, square, oblong, and irregular RDG TOOLS SMALL CENTER FINDER SQUARE 1-1/2" 38MM MEASURES BAR UPTO 3" DIAMETER | eBay and all you do is mark the line turn it mark again and centre is there. Or am I missing something?

I've already got one of those but it's no good for use on the milling machine.

I have a couple. It's one of those things you don't use very often but when you have a need it's worth its weight in gold.

The one William just got is used to find the centre a long the length of a bar.

That's what I meant.... you hollow from the end or at least I do but then I don't hollow metal so perhaps its different

This is the new tool. It's the bottom one with a 6mm carbide insert.

The other two tools have 15mm and 9mm flat inserts.

Would be great for setting up to cut key-ways on shafts.

Have you used it yet William how was it to hold and use, it sure looks great.

No I've not used it yet, just copied the general shape of commercial tools. I used it when it was straight though and it cut well. I'll be making a replacement straight version in slightly thicker bar tomorrow.
