Curiosity, and the fact that I know some of you are very technically and electronically minded.

These are the specs from the manual, what are the key elements you need when looking for a charger.

airshield pro.jpg

Is it not exceeding the nominal output, or the amperage. On the technical data it states the voltage is 12v, so does it need a 12v charger?

If the batteries are 3 x 3.6v nominal, is the total 10.8v nominal, with a maximum output of 12.6v, hence a 12v unit.?

And am I right if you link batteries as above + to + and - to - then the voltage is 3.6v, but if you go + to - you increase that voltage to 10.8v? I seem to remeber thats how you got two 12v batteries on a truck to give you 24v.

I am curious as to why you have a 4.2v nominal output. Is it the charger may put out 12v, but would generally charge at an average of 4.2v?

If anyone cares to answer, please do so as if talking to an electricians idiot, in other words in plain language even I can understand.

thanks in advance.

I am especially curious as yesterday I bought a new beard trimmer, which has 3.6 v battery but a 5 volt charger.

An observation John waiting 14 hrs from flat to fully charged run for the hills. I always follow the makers recommendation for chargers I have a knowledge of Electrical theory sorry not worth passing on because manufacturers compromise on specs its muddy.

Charger for what?

Take a PP3 9V battery (one of those rectangular ones with one flowery looking contact and one round on), put a meter on it and it should read over 9V. This is the off load Voltage. It will drop when it is put under load. (look up Ohms law)
A 12V drill is only 12V without load, 10.8 is nearer the value in use.
Most manufacturers go for the highest value they can legally use and will lie through their teeth if necessary.
Hi Fi equipment is usually shown in peak values to make people think they are getting something they are not.
A 100W peak piece of kit is probably about 30W (RMS), in real life.

Your combined cells need to "Trickle charge" at 4.2V for efficiency. Sticking 12V straight up them would not be good!

Your trimmer charger will be rated off load. There is a marketing ploy of "Bigger is better"!

Hope this makes sense.
If not, look up Ohms superposition theorium, then sit in a corner and cry!:whistling::funny:

Curious what result came of your post, purchase of rectifying the loss is the unit in use etc?

The Trend Airshield Pro, sits gathering dust. As I have not turned much in last couple of months ain't been an issue. I contacted a company called allbatteries, who replied asking for pictures and further spec, providing a lot less than Neil (thanks for the info) did in terms of what to look for. I can see me buying a Trend replacement, but was sounding out options and advice on electrical items. I have time yet as I have a pile of jobs to do before I can spend decent time turning owt.
