Chestnut burr sanded to 400 grit and then coloured with red and yellow water based dyes and finished with Danish oil before giving it a buff. Measures 5 1/2" X 2 1/2"

That looks good derek mate. Have you got a photo of it before you applied the dye?

I don't but have this from another piece of the same wood which shows what it would look like with just a oil finish on it. This was a larger piece about 10" diameter

[MENTION=1780]Cumbrian Craig[/MENTION] just get a piece and have a go. Just remember keep your hands/fingers behind the toolrest and always turn the chuck by hand before starting to make sure that nothing is catching. Stop frequently not only for checking the shape but to check there is nothing that can break off and do any harm.
