Inspired by PhilH, I cut a piece off the Christmas Tree, boiled it for an hour which gave me ear ache, dried it for a few hours and then turned it. It was bone dry and there was none of that horrible sticky sap.
The first one (with the yellow sumac band) was a bit thin at the ends and a bit flakey so I put a bit of Padauk on the second and kept it a bit thicker. The photo looks like there is a bleed around the centre band on the second one but its not prominent on the pen.

What container did you boil it in

Umm, I used one of the CMM's casserole pans with a lid. I made a stupid mistake and didn't wait until she would be out for hours... my ears are healing nicely though.:funny:
