Inspired by PhilH, I cut a piece off the Christmas Tree, boiled it for an hour which gave me ear ache, dried it for a few hours and then turned it.  It was bone dry and there was none of that horrible sticky sap.

The first one (with the yellow sumac band) was a bit thin at the ends and a bit flakey so I put a bit of Padauk on the second and kept it a bit thicker.  The photo looks like there is a bleed around the centre band on the second one but its not prominent on the pen.
