One of my first tries at a wooden pen, the finish isn't the best, it was just sanded to 400 grit then a couple of coats with Danish oil.

What would you recommend for a better finish?

There is nothing wrong with that, not the style, fit or finish.
For a first attempt that is better than some experts work I have seen.
A can of worms with recommending a finish or technique, I will stand back on that one till they are all finished then disagree init?

My preferred finish for wooden pens is Chestnut Friction Polish. It's quick and easy to apply over a coat of cellulose sanding sealer and give a durable glossy finish. Now lets see what the CA protagonists say on this :funny:

Nice pen by the way

A nicely turned pen

Personally what I do is.

sand with appropriate grits, I go to 400, then use nyweb to 800, then spray on chestnut acrylic sanding sealer, then friction polish and finish with microcrystaline wax

You will be told many ways on here, they will all be right its down to personal preference (unless its going horribly wrong)

A very nice pen but don't listen to anyone who says anything other than CA. They're all nuts anyway and need sedating. :funny:

Looks good enough to me as it is. I am not going to get involved in the finishing methods, everyone has their own preference.
You will get quite a few suggestions I should imagine and I would advise you to have a go at the different ones and you will find the one that suits you.

Rule of thumb Gillian, is do and learn .. :whistling:

Me, i very rarely sand now days, but if i have to i use a 600 grit .. One coat of sand sealer, leave to dry, a couple of coats of friction polish, you only need a few drops, to much and you don't get as good shine .. Then wax her up .. Gives me good results ..

There, no sitting on the fence from me .. :goesred:

Nice pen, but the only finish you should be using is CA it fills any gaps in the grain and is the best finish there is, some people will try to tell you how easy it is to use oil, wax and lots of other rubbish, they are wrong, they just can't be bothered to put a proper finish on, it does take skill:devil:

Very nice pen
As for the best finish - It is the one You are happiest, with, whether it is an oil, CA, friction polish, wax. Just try different ones and choose which you prefer
You'll probably end up with different finishes for different woods anyway :nooidea:

Hi Gillian that is one smart looking pen with a nice finish if you are happy using an oil finish then ignore all the other crap and do what you want its your pen Oil is a good durable finish I use it all the time on bowls and have done for years pens I use polish well several different types it is all trial and error and finding a finish that you are happy with and you enjoy using all the ones who use C/A finish well the fumes have effected there brains and they no longer function properly so just be kind to the poor less fortunate ones among us it is quite sad really poor ol buggers

CA is a finish and wax is a repeated temporary measure. I am not going to read any more replies to this thread because I'm right. :mooney2::mooney2:

Er, nope, you're not, we all are :funny::funny::funny:

- nice pen Gillian.

The question should be what kind of finish do YOU want on the pen.
A nice glossy, hard wearing finish? Either CA or spray lacquer (I use Halfords / Ford car lacquer) or Chestnut do a range too.
Waxy finish - Friction polish, wax sticks.
Oil etc

Etc etc

There are so many finishes I'm afraid it's down to your preference & what you want on your pens.

Like I said, all the nutters are down south :face::face:

Shape and fit both spot on Gill, that's the most important thing. You can put a great finish on a crap pen, but it will still look crap. Give the various types a go to see which one you prefer. I like ca, friction polish a microcrystalline wax, I even like using spray lacquer. I don't stick to one type and pretty much decide when I've finished sanding, but that's me.
good luck on your adventures, and thanks for showing a great pen!
