My view is that it depends on how future proof you want your chuck to be. If you are happy with your current nova jaws and cant ever see yourself wanting anything more or different, then it really makes no difference whether you go for a nova or a vicmarc or a sorby or any of the others that take nova jaws. They all do the same job to more or less the same level. Its just the price that differs.

On the other hand, if you feel you might want to get other jaws in the future, then I'm with Doug. Get a Versachuck from Toolpost. They might not look quite as pretty as an Axi Evolution, but they are accurate, bomb proof, and will accept any jaws on the market from almost all the makers. I am so convinced by the concept, having owned and used one for about the last 8 years or more, that I really cannot understand why anyone would want to limit themselves to one make of jaws by buying anything else.

I have the Nova Super and a G3 which are all interchangeable. I also purchased a Dakota Chuck from Rutlands and at £60 odd I think it was a fantastic Buy. The Nova Jaws also fit the Dakota.

Having 3 chucks might seem over the top but I find it so handy to be able to leave a piece of work on the chuck but remove it from the lathe if needed

I must be loonytoons over the top then, I can't count on both hands how many I have.
There are 8 on my shed wall without what are in various drawers.
Can't have too many things to grip with init?

Well here's my two penn'orth.

I must have used or tested pretty much every brand of chuck over the years and the one thing I can say is that there is not a lot to choose between them in terms of doing the job.

I like the Axminsters because you can change jaws by winding them in and out but the down side if you want to do that is you need a set of jaw carriers for every set of jaws.

The Nova and Sorby Patriot have interchangeable jaws. The Versachuck will take just about any jaws manufactured.

The Vicmarks are good too but hard to get hold of in the UK.

The range of jaws available for any of the above is extensive so opting for any one brand is not going to restrict you too much.

In conclusion I now feel under resourced with only four chucks to my name.

i have the Axi, I like the set up as per Walter suggestion. I have a set of jaw carriers for all the regular used jaws.

Also have a cs2000, old one but its only has a set of pen blank jaws in for drilling the blanks..

In conclusion I now feel under resourced with only four chucks to my name.

I feel really really under resourced as I only have two wood turning chucks..:sob: I have 4 metal turning and around 30 collect chucks if I can count them as chucks..

Makes me feel better anyway..

I have an Axi Woodman & Clubman. I also have a Versa with a set of Axi O'Donnel jaws. The Versa is the most versatile, taking other makers jaws but I have no complaints at all about the Axis.
