Classic Elite Pen Failures

I've turned two of these Classic Elite Fountain pens and on both of them the thread inside the "centre band" has either come out completely or stripped the thread.

Does anyone have any idea what I might be doing wrong? Or is it likely to be the quality of the kit?

Not sure what the problem is here Jack.

But pics would help here..

If you are on about the plastic threaded section that's inside the cap breaking / stripping then if you could explain how they are breaking would help.

In use, when building or returned from customers?

I remember a few of the gent kits having problems of the plastic threaded section coming loose and pushing inside the kit, the simple method to prevent it happening wa to put a little CA on the inside just before pressing the parts together.

But never heard anything on the classic elite kits.

Which version of classic elite are you turning - a picture would be good. When does the thread strip or come out?

Not sure if it is the same kit but I had a similar problem several times with a 'Classic Fountain Pen' kit where the threaded section inside the cap separated from the cap as it was being unscrewed. My solution was to use a tiny drop of CA to fix it back in place within the cap.

Thanks for the fast replies all, and thinking about it not submitting pictures was a rookie move!

So they are coming apart after I've fitted them, and checking the quality, before give to my wife to give away, or whatever she does with them!

Shown the "warn" thread which after only being screwed on once or twice it appears to have just given up on me - I believe this one is beyond saving now, totally at a loss as to why this happened.

Shows the thread from inside the centre band which has totally escaped it's moorings and is on the thread of the pen's screw thread.

Shows the thread attachment next to where it needs to go. I guess I can just apply some ca glue to this and put it back in, I can see making sure it goes in deep enough, and square is going to be fun, especially while trying to not get any on the threads!

My concern is that 2 of these kits I've fitted have both had some sort of failure, just want to see if it was something I was doing wrong or just the quality of the kits. I have 2 more of these to turn from that specific batch, and more on the way. They look fine other than the issues, but perhaps you get what you pay for! I think in future I'll be looking at using the TM Omega's instead for a little more money per kit.

Ahh that's the original version which I stopped using a while back for exactly the reason you've described. I use the '2' version now which has no real issues and the thread is much better. The Omega (TM) is a good alternative kit at a similar price point, with the Mistral (Beaufort ink) at the higher end.

Just an update, I turned and constructed the last of the three of these kits last night, I had the same problem. The plastic insert came out, I tried to glue it back in, being as careful as I could, and as I suspected would happen, I got some on the threads and now it's one for the junk pile.

So either something was very wrong with my specific batch of kits, or these kits in general.

I advise anyone new to the hobby who isn't already aware to steer clear of the "Classic Elite" or "Classic" kits, at least the V1 kits (the ones with the bobble on the end).

From someone who does not turn a lot of pens I know the quality of a good or bad kit. I had kits can't remember which but the threads on them were terrible I just throw them away and now careful where I buy kits from. better to buy quality than waste money on some of the rubbish being produced.
