I am kind of in the same situation, I always avoided click pens because I had read that the click mechanisms could be a problem & didn't want people complaining. Recently I decided that I should be offering them so bought from Beaufort TM & Procraft, the kits I purchased are all about the same sort of price & I can't say any of them were a problem to make & they all seem to work as expected but I can't speak for the longevity of them. Getting the barrel lengths right with a click pen is vital for them to work correctly & from what I have read a lot of the problems come from people not getting this size correct because they alter the tube length when trimming.

I've never made a click pen because of the reliability of the mechanism, now this has always amazed me that the kits makers can't make a reliable one, yet you can buy click pens for pennies from almost anywhere that will work right up to running out of ink.

Penn state industries have a good selection of click pens.

For kitless pens, you could try the Schmidt SKM-88 or the SKM-192. Both are very reliable clicks. The 192 is smaller in length and diameter, but you have to make the click button as well. The SKM-88 is larger, but is a complete clicker that is threaded in. You could also go to Axminster Tools and check their click pen kits from PSI. They use the SKM clickers on several of their kits.

A little bit of fettling and I adapted a Zephyr into a click with a Schmidt SKM-88. Works very well although this one is not perfect so is now for my own use.Its dressed in oak from a 1920's railway carriage.
