Nowt wrong with that from the pic - I wondered if it was corn cob when you showed the blanks- never knew you could do that! (not you, but never knew there was a process ! everyday is a school day - I'm still a newbie really!)

Excellent work, Mark, the corn pattern looks great.
did you stabilise in a pressure pot?
I dried a couple of cobs a few years ago which showed great marking when turned, but didnt last. I never heard about stabilising then.

A long time ago, it may have been Woody or Brian... But they had corn for tea and literally took the cob and turned it ( with a lot of CA)..... I bought the blanks a fair time ago, probably got another 6:ciggrin:

I asked a friend to encapsulate a couple of fir cones.
To many voids when turned. Probably the process.

Hi Dave, fir cones are great when turned, they look like little aliens or sea creatures.... But yes they can be very difficult to get void free and do suffer with pin prick holes. I have a couple to turn from a master caster George Watkins and he always states "may contain holes" :whistling:20150610_180120.jpg
Alan, no I didn't stabalise myself it was bought that way, but no I don't believe you use pressure when stabalising.... Its put in a tank for a while, then cooked after as with normal timber:thinks::thinks:

Stabilising requires the opposite in fact Alan. You use a vacuum rather than pressure, as the fluid needs to be pulled into blank rather than have air bubbles squeezed into oblivion.

A very nice pen Mark. I made a few of these a few years ago. If I can find a photo I’ll post it. You could buy the dried corn cobs from the pet shop as they came in animal feed.

I’ve found a couple of photos. I’m afraid I ate the corn first, dried the cob then stabilised with ca before turning.
