Hi, Guys,

Made this pair earlier. I'm beginning to like the Lucida, plus the mechanism is more positive than its look-a-like cousin, the Sierra. These two are in spalted/mottled apple (ex Woody), and laburnum. Usual grits to 600, three coats of friction polish.

Regards,

Bob.

Oooooh yes, yes, yes !.

I sound like that bird on Harry met Sally :funny:

They are very nice, love the Laburnum, how did you get it cut that way ?

That Apple is to die for isn't it. Unfortunately I blew all but one of mine out with the bloody endmill, which has now gone in the bin in favour of the disc sander, much kinder on spalted stuff.

Hi, Guys,

Thanks for your comments - much appreciated!

The spalted and mottled apple came from Lord Woody, who had some come his way last year and was good enough to distribute it to us needy members (thanks, Woody!)

PhillH, I found this among some other laburnum blanks purchased last year.

Ed, I started worrying about the Sierra kits when I noticed that 50% of them were a bit suspect. By this I mean that when the mechanism was turned, it very often started to unscrew rather than wind out the nib. Does this make sense, matey?

Regards, Bob.

Look great Bob,really like the laburnum, just one thing, has the spalted apple chipped at the nib end? Had the same problem if so.

Hello, Matt,
It didn't on this occasion but it has done in the past. Spalted/mottled apple, beech and some other woods are very prone to this. If a blank feels as light as balsa wood then be careful! One suggestion is to cover the ends in CA and let it soak in and dry. If your chisels are not sharp be very careful. Another tip is - when you've turned almost down to the bushes switch to sanding. Hope this helps, Matt!

It just looks like it had,in the middle.

I find that the way you face the blanks off has a lot to do with the state of the ends.

Thanks, Ray.

Yes, the Lucida is a nice pen. An added bonus is you can now use all those offcuts from attractive blanks instead of binning them!

Enjoy, matey!

Bob.
