Hello, Matt,

It didn't on this occasion but it has done in the past. Spalted/mottled apple, beech and some other woods are very prone to this. If a blank feels as light as balsa wood then be careful! One suggestion is to cover the ends in CA and let it soak in and dry. If your chisels are not sharp be very careful. Another tip is - when you've turned almost down to the bushes switch to sanding.
