How does one create a logo, or other items such as business cards, that use a drawing or hand written part rather than a computer typeface?

I can sketch away to my heart's content, but dont know what the next stage is.

Ultimately it will need to end up as some sort of computer file Mark, as that's the way printshops function these days, so your hand drawn artwork will need to be scanned onto a computer and turned into an image that has a recognised image format. The good old fashioned print shops that still have a physical, walk through the door approach to business should be able to help you sort it all out if you don't have a scanner yourself, but all the purely online ones will expect you to send them a "camera ready" digital file.

so is it a matter of drawing and scanning it? That is easy enough to do.

(or rather is the simplest of methods for me to draw it and scan it? I appreciate that most will probably be created on a computer and saved in an appropriate format)

Not linked to making pens or anything like that but I got my business cards done by vista print who will make you some suggestions if you tell them what sort of thing you are looking for ...at least in a business card anyway...

That's it Mark - it's as simple as that. Just make sure that the digital file you are presenting conforms to the correct size ratio in terms of length and height. It wont matter if it's over sized, in fact possibly better, but the ratio must be correct. You'll be able to find out what that ratio is from your chosen printshop - they all seem to vary slightly.

Home help indeed Donald, pure magic. My wife has great drawing skills as a real long time quilter as well I remember a 6 feet by eight feet Tigers Head had 3900 pieces in it in coloured material hand sketched and designed on the kitchen table.
