cross cut pens update

So I have continued with the cross cut blanks & can report that so far I have not had a single chipped blank so hopefully the problem has been solved, difficult to say what was causing the problem as I have made a number of changes & any one of them or a combination of them could have been the culprit. Anyway hopefully the chipped ends are all in the past.
Couple of pictures just to show all is OK now, the first picture plus some others which I havent photographed have all been turned since making the changes, the second picture is the comfort pens I ended up making with blanks that I had chipped the ends on & couldn't repair, couldn't bring myself to just throw these away lol

Obviously these still need to be assembled, have quite a few now that need put together lol, my turning is not great but hopefully will improve with practice, good thing though is that the wood for most of these is so nice you just don't notice lol

Thanks people, most of them have been made from offcut bits of wood from other things that I do, I bought a couple of packs of pen blanks when I first started but then thought it was a bit of a waste of money when I had so many really nice bits of offcut that were to small to be used for much else lol

So far so good thanks Phil, not saying it won't happen again (don't want to tempt fate lol) but the chances of it happening again must now be greatly reduced with the changes I have made thanks to advice from the forum.

Every pen blank I cut from that is possible is right angle cross cut. The difference on pens isw like night and day,worth the extra effort IMHO. Glad its working better for you.

Peter, when I first started I bought a few different blanks from various places, they were all cut with the grain. When I started to cut my own blanks I cut them all the same way as I just thought that was how it was done. I buy Olive wood blanks & while looking at the sellers website noticed he had cross cut blanks so emailed to ask what the difference was & if they were more difficult to turn. Got a very good reply so decided it was worth a shot. It is certainly worth it for me especially now I seem to have the problem of the chipped ends under control lol
