Came across a pen turning supplies shop online that seems to sell bushings made of delrin.

and the point of that is???

I have obviously lived most of my life with my head buried in a rabbit warren, what is the point of that or is it a looney fad from our friends across the pond?

Waste of money. If you finish with CA take the blank off the bushings and finish it between centres. You only had it between the bushings to make it easier to turn it to the right size, once you have done that the bushings serve no further purpose.

Another example of someone inventing something we don't need in an effort to part us from our hard earned cash.

Just my opinion. :mooney2:

Or for those who can't be arsed to remove the blanks to place between centres ... I know, i have been called lazy before ..

I have to admit to being provocative, for the first time in my life.

Walter, and Brian, I'm with you, a waste of time!

I dont even remove the metal bushings, the glue breaks away from them and so far I think this year I have only screwed up one blank.

I agree, complete waste of money.

Time isn't a problem for me so before finishing, I replace the bushings with cones I turned from acrylic and nylon which means the ends get sealed as well. Takes only seconds.

We all have our own methods and practices, none of them are right or wrong.
Just some are more dangerous than others, what may seem silly or a waste of time, effort, money to you.
May seem perfectly reasonable and a good investment to others.
Enjoy your hobby, stay safe init?

I'm with you Neil, I don't change the bushings either and snap the metal ones off.

I used to do that but had too many frayed ends to tidy up, it takes seconds to remove the bloody things.
It's so easy to chip the ca away from the blank and not notice it until it comes back at you.
Plus I like to seal the end grain especially if I am wet sanding which I sometimes do init?

I generally do turn between centres as I think we have discussed before, using bushes as a guide to mic up before finishing.
A mandrel is fine if you're not fussy, ( that'll wind some people up init?) or if you have a bulk to do quickly.

If you turn your own cones from delrin there is no waste of money, they fit whatever range of tubes you make them for. Much easier to deal with the CA that has stuck to them and CA does stick to them, just not as badly. Great investment if you make your own.

I agree with Neil on this one. I usually do the same as Walter and fit cones to CA finish them.

As for making Derlin cones yes, it's a good idea but IMHO it's just another job to get done that I don't have time to do.

When metal cones have worked for me then I will continue using them.

Delrin as far as I remember is just a trade name for "acetal" which is available from a number of manufacturers.

Another good material for cones is PTFE if you can get hold of any offcut or samples. Failing that, both polypropylene and nylon work well also.

As an aside, I have loads of white 3mm thick polyprop sheet, no good for cones but if anyone wants some bits, pm me as I can take with me to York next month.
