Last year, on a tour of the French WW1 + 2 battlefields, we visited Delville Wood, where 2500 South Africans (and many others) perished in the Great War. I found a small chunk of French Oak (fallen and picked up, I hasten to add), brought it home and have now sawn a blank and made a pen with some significance behind it.

I deliberately left the upper barrel slightly wider than the bottom fitting, with a nod to the shells used in flattening virtually the entire wooded area (now replanted and grown).

Great looking pen Andrew.:thumbs::thumbs:

I haven't read much about South Africa contribution to the war effort. I will have to see what I can find next time I am in a book shop.

Every time I hear of the Somme, I think of Lemmy's song "1916":thumbs:
