Die Holders

So Ive had my first go at cutting threads as I work up to making my first kitless pen.- Im hoping to invest in some triple start taps and dies but the size I want (14mm) requires a 1.5" die holder and as far as I can ascertain there is no such holder on the market which is on a 1MT only 2MT or 3MT

Can anyone shed some light?

Headstock and tailstock are both 1MT

If you buy the 1MT version it should be fairly easy to make the 1.5" holder fit, I will look at mine which is 2mt and see how the 1.5" holder fits to it.

If you look at this 1mt from RDG they say "OTHER HEADS CAN BE MADE TO TAKE LARGER DIES IF NEEDED" I don't know if that means they can make them or you can make them yourself, worth a phonecall or email to clarify though.

In fact RDG do make one for a 1.5 inch die, but it's showing on their site with a 2MT. However, as Peter says, I suspect that if you speak to them they may be able to just fit it with a 1MT instead. The MT appears from the photos to be a separate component, and they are engineers - they don't just buy in their stuff off the shelf, they make it them selves as far as I know.

We have those as well, although not quite as expensive. With the shaft being 3/4" it would need a big Jacobs chuck to hold it.

5 mins on the net they abound in 1mt. THe one I use in 2mt for dies and stocks. Do a search Ian. Use the terms Floating Tail Stock die holder, Lathe Tailstock Die Holder Set.

Peter Ive spent a lot more than 5 minutes online!! - No one makes a 1MT holder for a 1.5" die. The images you show seem to be 2MT and holders for the smaller 1" dies.
I have contacted RGD tools as their website advised that they could make different heads, but when I got speaking to someone I was told they cannot do a 1.5" holder on a 1MT shank! so I still dont have a solution.

I admit flying blind without full info ie your lathe name and specs etc however this unit on Amazon is made for small lathes adjustable rear,to fit the tailstock and a separate small front holder in addition to the 1 1/2 inch holder. Now I feel I have tried good luck mate.

It says that, but when you enquire about a larger head they they are unable to make it!

Thanks Peter, but unfortunately this is a 1" holder with smaller insert.

The one I linked to is 1MT and takes 1" dies, my 1.5" holder would fit into that as it is to go into a 1" holder. It would be fairly simple to make one if you can't find someone who sells just the 1.5" holder to fit or you could buy the one linked to and also a 2mt set with a 1.5" holder. If you want to see the 1.5" holder let me know and I will photograph it.

Found it!!
I've been trying to find the link to this for a couple of days. Another customer of mine bought one a few months ago, but the link he gave me didn't work.

It says very clearly half way down the page that he'll supply with 1MT if requested, and a bit further down the page he shows the 1.5 inch adapter. Not cheap, but it sorts all your tap and die requirements in one go. I've only had one piece of feedback about it, from the guy who gave me the heads up about it in the first place, who bought it for exactly the same reason as you need it for. His opinion was that it's first class.

That's a hell of a price 190$ plus postage, customs, Vat etc,, It looks nicely made though.
