Since I have been turning pens and the odd bowl or 2 I have noticed that sometimes there is huge difference in prices for what looks like the same item. People don't appreciate the time and skill that goes into turning things that are hand made. The time, effort and the materials used to finish each item is all at a cost and it only comes together with experience which is difficult to value. In previous years I have looked at pens, bowls and various other craft items at shows and really appreciate the effort that goes into making them and understand the value of it. I just wish other people could see the value in hand made items as well.

What I have found is when people look at my pens. The comments are WOW they are stunning how much are they. Then when you quote them what I would regard a fair price you can see the change in their faces. They don't obviously want to pay that fair price. They want them for the price of a Bic pen. Now I only make a pen if someone asks me for a specific type and agrees on the price upfront. If it's family I am happy to make them for the price of the components. My biggest seller is bullet pens they go as fast as I can make them.

I’ve not turned a thing for nearly two years for the same reason. People see what I make and ask me to make them one. As soon as I mention £30 the subject changes. Just because we make them folks expect them for nothing.
