Hi Peter suggested I post how to use shadow highlights adjustments in Photoshop elements and I have posted a very amateur attempt of a video which is a first for me so please excuse my clumsy attempts. I have no program to capture the video off screen so had to use my SLR on a tripod to record if anyone has any knowledge on what to program to get I would be grateful. At the beginning is the diffuser I use with the internal flash the video is best watched if you change the quality to HD in utube.

Peter told me about the shadow option a while back, works really well on the darker woods

Vic told me how to do the rest, it really makes a difference to the photos.

I made a light box but still get better results with the lights facing the opening, 125watt bulbs facing into the box

I am sure that's a great help for people with Elements and probably other software with similar controls. If you make any more maybe we need to think about making a Sticky with links to the videos for ease of finding them.

I believe there is built in software to record screen video on Windows, but obviously I have no idea how good it is or what the sound capabilities are. If anyone has a Mac there is built in software that can capture Screen Video and sound providing they have a microphone either built in or external.

Thanks for that I am sure it will be a big help.

Hi Peter thank you for the link I have Windows 10 but did eventually manage to get this program sorted unfortunately it saves the file as a zip file so undaunted I downloaded Winrar which did unzip the file but when it is unzipped it is not a avi or any other video file it is probably a html format I have tried to convert the file but no joy I need a video file of sorts so I can edit in premier elements.

Sorry about that, but I don't use widows. I have just had another look and this came up, but I don't know what format it uses, maybe you can have a look and see if it says. http://mspoweruser.com/how-to-record-your-screen-using-the-built-in-screen-recorder-on-windows-10/ If that doesn't work there must be some free app that would do the job.

I have taught digital imaging and made small movies to show different techniques and put them on DVD instead of providing back up notes. It's a great way to teach something, but it's a shame that they need to be put on youtube rather than on the Forum, but I suppose it's the bandwidth they take up.

I just looked again at the link and maybe that is not the way to do it, sorry.

Good explanation of using the shadow and highlight part of Photoshop Elements Bill:thumbs:

I use Photoshop Elements 12 and go about it a different way, which Peter showed me some time ago.
I'll having a go at the histogram method when I eventually get time to make a pen :rolling:

If I didn't show you about the histogram and I can't remember that long ago, that's probably the way to go, quick, easy and quite accurate.

I will try and have an other go at this video stuff next week at the moment I have 2 long days and three 13 hour night shifts to get through so won't be free until next Thursday will be able to look at forum at breaks at work though. Chas if you want to have a go at the histogram it is in levels just underneath the drop down menu where you get shadows/highlights.

Be interesting to see the results from the followers of the software correctors in the future we may spend heaps of time on the pics rather than the timber/ plastic or pens. Dramatic quality changes have occurred due to so many improvements in camera design some basic needs are great care with lighting/shadows. Nearly all Studio Studio successes were using one light bouncing off the wall for portraits using what we called Rembrandt lighting and backgrounds home made using sponges and paints. Product photography an endless background and plain backgrounds using even lighting and a top light for shadow less pictures. Careful pics will reveal all manner of inadequate turning and defects come up just as well as perfection. Then the users of high profile IT will dominate with turning in second place. I used to wonder during the 40,s how come adults had no wrinkles almost ageless all down to the skill of the retouchers as I learned in my Camera Club.
