I'd like to have a go at making a dip pen, probably in metal. Where do you folks buy your knibs and the tubular part (name?) that holds the knib itself? I do have a selection of old knibs somewhere but I don't know how suitable they are as they're quite old and some of them are very small. TIA.

The last time I asked Melanie (fingwe) the answer was Penman Direct here: Penman Direct - for everything calligraphy – PenmanDirect for the ferrules (tubular part) and nibs. Unsure as to the source for holders for the oblique style, although I'm sure Melanie will see this and enlighten us.
Yep, Penman Direct are best if you just want a couple of ferrules, and you can get the nibs from there too (there's a wide range of nibs for different types of calligraphy, so if you're aiming for a particular market, it may be best to choose a nib appropriate for that style). Otherwise Stiles and Bates do the ferrules in larger quantities. They're a bit difficult to find I think, so the link is here Calligraphy Nib Inserts LCALIG_MST from Stiles and Bates
In terms of oblique pens, most penmakers will make their own 'flange' - if anyone wants any advice, feel free to contact me.

As far as I know they are the only ones available. It would be possible to make your own though...it's simply a sheet of thin metal, with 'fingers' cut onto one side and then folded in half and rolled into a tube. I can open one out and take a photo and dimensions if you'd like?

Melanie, I'm going to order a few ferrules from penman to have a go at some caligraphy pens, looking at there nibs is mind boggling to a complete novice! Do you have any recommendations as to which nibs to go for as a starter?
Hi Paul, well, as I said before, it really depends on what type of calligraphy your end user is going to do.
If it's for someone who does 'gothic' style calligraphy as we're used to here in the UK, then probably something like these would work (though I must admit, I know very little about this form of calligraphy) William Mitchell Pedigree Round Hand – PenmanDirect
Otherwise, if it's for someone who is doing 'pointed pen', or 'modern' calligraphy, which is gaining in popularity over here, then get a Nikko G.

Yes, I bought a few. I have some others somewhere but they didn't look as fancy as the ones on the Penman site!
Penman direct seem very good to me. I placed an order for some nibs not realising they sold the ferrules as well. I placed a second order (for the ferrules) about 15 minutes later and had to pay another lot of postage. Penman Direct realised what I'd done though and have refunded the postage on my second order. I'll be using them again!
