Hi,

I'd like to add some texture detail to a pen and also to some other wood turnings, but I can't afford the Robert sorby tool.

Any ideas how I could do this?

Thanks.

All it is, is a handle with a hole in the end..... with a Dremel bit inserted, free to rotate in the handle.
Set the lathe running slowly and (using the tool rest) press the tool against the top of the rotating work whilst moving it along slowly to the right.

All these were made with a bit like the one on the left.

A tool you could make uses a single knurling tool. My version is next to the wire burner. I ground the sq corners off and inserted in a handle. Holding at varied angles and/or angling right or left, increasing or decreasing the speed will have different effects. I have pointed to 2 examples in the top photo. The 2 next to my home made were purchased from Terry Scott in New Zealand. They are essentially the same thing but with smaller patterns. While it wont work on side grain you can see my homemade chatter tool (3rd from the left)

Ruth here is a better picture of the pattern you can get with a knurling tool.
