Here is a JR Gent with a Tambootie coat on. At the narrow end you can see that it is undercut (which started happening a few pens ago when I started using a mandrel saver . Thing is it isn't consistent all around ,only on one side. Is my mandrel bent and causing an oval shape ? Or is it anything to do with using the mandrel saver ?

Ed,

Take the bushes off the shaft and engage the mandrel saver so that its passed the threaded end of the rod and switch it on. Put your finger on the mandrel. Is it vibrating? If it is, undo the collet end, blow hard to clear any crap and reassemble but dont overtighten. Repeat, if it still vibrates it s bent!

Are they just threaded at the collet end Neil ?

The kiss test is to put a pointed centre in both head and tailstock bring the tailstock right up to the headstock the two points meet up that is the kiss they should be aliened perfectly another point is have you got any of the mandrel bar showing behond the bushes with no thread on it to fit into the mandrel saver if not this is probably your problem threaded rod is smaller than the rod itself

Ahhhh that kiss ...did that a while ago but not recently ..will have another look at that . I have always passed the end thread with the saver so it can't be that .

The cause of this sort of problem can be difficult to pin down, you just have to eliminate them one by one.

Anything suggested so far is a possible cause as is a worn mandrel and bushes with too much slop in the fit.

You can check if the mandrel is bent by removing it from the collet, placing it on a flat surface such as a machine bed and see if it rolls true. If it is bent it should be obvious.

Ed, you may be overtightening the mandrel which slightly lifts the rod when using the pen saver .. Well, it did with mine when I saw the same issue my friend.. What i did to overcome this was to hit the rod with the nut at the edge with a wooden mallet so that the mandrel was tight in the headstock .. Hope you understand this garbage as i just got in from work and not wound down yet ...

Sound as if that's worth a try Jim as the mandrel doesn't now appear to be bent and the headstock and tail-stock align perfectly.....I'll give it a go . Thanks everyone for your input.
