... Sometimes want to throw their lathe into the nearest river? I have finally got to the home stretch of the first pen I have made in nearly a year, and the reality is not measuring up to my (rose-tinted) idea. Tonight I applied the first coats of CA to the cap, had a long look at it and then switched off and came into the house. Just can't be arsed ...

:crybaby:

Just thought I'd share in case I'm not alone.

Feelings come and go there is no reason to push one way or the other we come into pen making for different reasons laying off is sweet as well. When you start flaying your back with a cat o nine tails over it kick the habit. Yesterday I had another trip into hospital in an ambulance with the world spinning around me two hours dumped in the corridor I simply called family and returned home off to the Doc this arvo could not walk a straight line still. I have two top pens to take pics of they can wait.Bit of a damper on SWMBO birthday yesterday.

Trying to say sad for you but all the best Peter.:waver::waver::waver:

Sometimes when things don't go to plan it is best to just turn everything off and recoup ready for the next day or next time. Throw my lathes away because I failed, not a chance.

As Peter and Walter have said. we all have off days, just turn off, walk away from it and relax. Go back to it tomorrow, or the next day.

Take a guess
Don't throw the lathe out David it's the reason why you're going in the workshop, without it you'd have to stop in the house & make conversation with your better half :shocking:

Keep that lathe, you know it makes sense :whistling::whistling:

By the way, Who's Dora :nooidea::nooidea:

I guess it's the same as anything you havent done in a while, I bet runners can't post fast times if they have had a year off etc.

I think all of us go through stages like that. Over the past couple of weeks I have had some great feedback on the stuff that I have turned and in particular photographed. I went into my shed today full of intent, put the radio on as normal and just sat there for 10 mins or so and could not work up any interest in doing anything. It as at times like that as others have already said to turn your back on it and walk away. Go back when you are up to it and you will find that what you wanted to achieve will come back to you.

This is the trouble when you're a perfectionist David, you get very frustrated when the smallest of things go wrong. The answer really is to open a can, give it a big coat of looking at and tomorrow you'll be back out there and BOOOM... back of the net.

Using ca to finish pens is enough to make anyone want to throw in the towel given the hassle I've had over the last two days with it. However, if there's other things you love to turn besides pens maybe turn something else. My first love of turning is bowls so when I get fed up of pens I just do a bowl instead.

I think we can all have days like that, like you I usually walk away from the problem (after i've given my self a godd rollocking for not geting it right) but after a while I have to get back to it, using the experience to move forward & get it right (or at least give it another go at getting a little closer to the holy grail)

Thanks for the cheering up, everyone. Peter, you certainly put my little problems in perspective! I hope all is well mate, we're rooting for you. (Not rooting in the Aussie sense ...) :goesred:

And don't worry - I'd never throw my lathe away - I am SOOOO enjoying that AT1416VS, what a machine! But sometimes I have to fight the urge ...

Paul, you know me too well! I've put myself under pressure to get this pen done for the Omega compo, but it's not a compo standard pen I'm afraid ... Ah well, I'll finish it anyway because it's an interesting project - sorry Dan, i tried ...

Oh - and Grandad, thanks for getting me into trouble with SWMBO! She saw your pic of Vi and thought I was on one of *those* websites ... Moi! N'cest pah possible!

Today I figured out my problem with the yips goes back a few days ago I bought a Spiffy Memory Foam Pillow around 90 bucks on special for 1/2 price it smelt strongly of petroleum and had a caveat printed sheet warning some people may be allergic at the Docs today he took one sniff of the pillow and nearly threw up so I got my money back and ordered a new one at the Chemist. Hopefully that will see my recovery from this real scare. In this country we have a real problem with people sniffing petrol in the indiginous communities getting on a high. Now I understand.

Peter (very relieved I can tell you) thanks for the kind remarks.:thumbs::thumbs:

Join the club David as you've read we all have days like that, just don't let it grind you down. Turners block, it creeps up on you.
