Has anybody used their proedge to free-hand sharpen drill bits? Is there any reason not to? At the moment, blunt ones go in the bin. I dont have a grinder or a drill doctor.

I have tried it with varying results. Occasionally I have got it spot on and the drill cut like a knife through butter, most times I made it worse. That's more of an indictment of my skill than a criticism of the Proedge. I solved my twist drill problem by buying a £10 drill sharpener from Lidl - works a treat but only for 118 degree twist bits - no fancy stuff catered for.

I sharpen by hand on a strip sander. I pay very close attention to the cutting edge to keep the angles the same for about 1/16 inch. After that I can be a little less attentive. Go slow and remove matl from both flutes as equally as possible.

Must be mixed feelings of you owners of the sharpening tools today with Brians post. I throw my used drills mostly cause the have done so well and the drill point drills are not able to sharpen.:fingers:

Peter.
