Hi, I want to put a permanent marker type pen into wood for my father in law, and I can't see how to drill a hole about 150mm deep. I think I saw maybe Grump? saying something about the blank in the chuck and a forstner bit in the tailstock, but I don't know how to have such a long shaft ? Is there some kind of extension ? There are no double entendres in this question !!
Regards Terry

Have just done a quick search on Google for 150,175 and 200mm long drill bits; will one of these not do the job you have in mind ?

Depends on how far your tailstock winds out Terry, a 3'' forstner bit with the same amount of tail stock wind out would give you about the depth you require would it not?

Put your block of wood in the chuck. Jacobs chuck in the tailstock with chosen cutting bit, bring tailstock up to the wood and start cutting, take it slowly winding the tailstock. The drill bit or whatever cuts the spinning wood, rather than the other way around.

Oh, if it don't quite go through, you could always try turning your lump of wood around and drill from the other side too if you need the hole to go all the way through.

My Forsetner bits are made by Dewalt and they do make an extension bar for te bits.
I can't give a link at the moment as I am at work and shouldn't be looking in here.
They are for larger diameter holes from 15mm up to 98 mm or there about.
Vinny does extra long drill drill bits at the Turners Workshop maybe not on his site but email him for details.
I have 7mm to 13mm in long length approx 180mm.
What diameter are you after?

Depending on what size hole you want you could bore a hole with a scrapper or a spindle gouge quite easy
