Turned my first pen from ebonite. What is the secret of getting a high shine how do you guys finish your ebonite pens?

The secret to a good finish..... Is the finish....
Once turned, go through your grades of finish,
For me off the skew I use 800, 1000 and 1200 grit paper both radially and laterally, wipe down between papers,
Then liquid Polish Farcla for me and if I have the scratches out it refines the finish

As Mark says......I also have tried Brasso...that can work well but remember.....you can polish crap but what you land up with is still crap. Initial finishing is everything.....good luck....

I did a kitless ages ago and pretty much followed the same as I do for CA or any other plastic. I sanded to 400 or 600 and then 0000 steel wool. All grits as flexi does around and across. Then I used the three wheels of the Beall buffer in the lathe. Tripoli, white diamond and lastly the carnauba wax. First radially, then diagonally both ways and finally lengthwise for each wheel. Clean the blank off between each grit with a clean cloth so you don't contaminate the finer grit wheel with coarser compound as you move up. Turn the wheels at about 1,000 to 1,200 rpm to keep the surface of the ebonite cool.
The "Little Black Number" is a pocket / purse fountain pen with a #5 Schmidt nib. Length cap on 9.2mm. Cap off 12.4mm. 12mm triple start thread.

Thanks. I wasn't looking for praise as it is one I did 8 years or so ago. I just wanted to show alpha1 that a high shine is possible.

I treat it in exactly the same way as I do acrylics. Just make sure though that you don't let the heat build up from any sanding or polishing regime you might use, or you will get a heat bloom on the ebonite that will be more than skin deep. Heat is the enemy of ebonite.
