Hi, Guys,

Spent a cold and wet morning in the workshop and made this pen from a stick of elm. After sanding the blank it looked a bit pale and with little of the grain showing. I applied some Burnt Sienna Artists oil paint from a tube and BINGO! out popped these lovely features. Pays to experiment, right?

Hi, guys,

Very much appreciate your comments - it keep me enthusiastic (onwards and upwards, and all that)! And talking enthusiasm - it's a real crap day in Kent - windy and wet, so I'm having a job staying in the workshop (keep having to nip back indoors for cuppas!) Thing is, I wanna finish a little dish I'm turning out of - yeah, I'm boring -some more nice laburnum. If it works I'll post it later.

Thanks again!

Bob.

Thanks, Jim!

Doug, Nothing to do with last night's curry, huh? Then how 'bout the one I had - could it have been this? Ooh, us woodworkers!

I love it when a simple piece of wood is brought out to something this special. Anyone can make a great pen out of rare burls, but it takes skill to bring something this good out of a simple piece of wood.

Hi, Yorkie,

Actually, you can always test the potential in a stick of wood such as a pen blank simply by wiping on some white spirit. This will normally cause the grain to "pop" straight away, allowing you to see at a glance what you have. However, don't do this on spalted wood as it may cause the spores to move, leaving you with a blurred smudge! The handy thing about white spirit is that it dries out OK. It also kills off the woodworm and other bugs (unless of course, they're meth drinkers, etc! LOL!)
