Don't know if I was having an off day today, but I found this a really difficult wood to turn as it kept chipping. Got there in the end though and I think it was worth it.

I love silky oak, It grow in our neighbouring state on the east side of where I live.
I was a very popular furniture timber and cheap in the early days of Tennant, I have managed to salvage a few things as people dump it.

Great looking pen Dave.:thumbs::thumbs:

David from here it is impossible to know the timber characteristics of your particular blank but this timber is incredible it finishes so well as you turn and you detect unusual lifting etc go for the sandpaper as you finalise the shape I have black and northern, southern etc versions would like to in time do a sample of each with before and after, well worth the effort mate, salvaged a wardrobe years ago it is a great furniture timber was almost wiped out by overuse here over the early years. It can in larger sizes bring out a terrible rash including skin breakouts a world famous hat maker visiting here turned a 40 kg block broke out in blisters, it has never even made me scratch . I give you the illustration of the hat it was turned wringing wet a full Western American Stetson style only mm,s thick no chipping or breakouts. whenever I have turned the Kimberly cousin Beefwood the forum rally enjoy that as well. Take care mate.

Peter.
