Look on the bright side at least you may get a shallow platter from it or has it gone to far.

Or you could always put it on the fire to warm you up now we would not want you poor people to freeze to death in the cold :sob::funny::funny:

As Richard Raffan always said at his demo when he had a catch first time.Over 62yrs ago I came back from National Service and asked my mum to pass the (crow call word) butter tried to refrain ever since using that and so many other words.

I felt for you Mark.

What do you use Woody?

I havnt used pyrography before or burned edges but I assume treating what you dont want burned with a heat resistant finish then heating up the edge with a blow torch from a distance would work..

Or another 2 options..
1st cut the entire edge off and have a flat base for a cake/cheese stand with an upside down glass bowl for the lid,a section of the edge could be used to turn a small like door knob for a handle on the top of the upside down bowl.

2 you could part the edge off at around 45 degrees then de chuck, remove the edge then laminate the circle onto the rest of the platter, re turn and have a slightly deeper dish, adding a thin lamination between the 2 pieces would also give a nice dark ring around the outside and inside of the join :)
