What finish would you use on a chisel handle? I am making up a carbide tool at the moment, and need to finish the handle.

I have a Liberon wax stick, BLO and some random outdoor furniture Teak oil type finish, no idea what is actually in it.

Thanks!

If that's all you have then leave it and let the natural oils from your hand do the job over the time you use it.

Burnish with saw dust .

That's exactly what I did!

A bit rough, but it works and will let me experience the wonderful world of carbide tools!

The handle used to be a table leg, I think it is beech. 12mm square rod.

I would rather the handle was longer and the bar shorter, but I am limited by the size of my lathe.

Now to put it to good use (but not tonight!)

A very nice looking tool... and I don't say that to many men.

You cut the bar on your lathe????????????

Yeah, those bar things at the bottom are great for clamping things to! :bwink:

I had a quick shot with it on the bit of wood left on my chuck after parting off - it cuts through end grain like butter! I had a beautiful ribbon of wood coming off.

I might change the end of it a bit, at the moment the cutter sits on top of the bar. I may try to recess it a little, but I want to make sure I leave enough meat on the bar for the screw to grip.

I was also going to burn the markings into the end of the tool, but for the life of me I couldn't find any wire around the garage, and couldn't wait to put it together! I think I will make some more of these with different cutters, and will code the ends of the handles so I can tell which is which when only the end is sticking out of the shavings :goesred:

Steven, thanks for giving me that cutter!
